Floral Embroidered Belt

These beautiful, flora- pattern, wool belts are hand-made by women's cooperatives in rural areas of Peru. Each belt is a one-of-a-kind work of beautiful craftsmanship using a contemporary take on traditional Andean techniques. The work is done according to fair trade guidelines; most of the artisans sew in their homes or at a communal studio workshop and are paid a living wage. These belts take two days to make and each is a unique expression of the woman who made it. The medium size belt measures 40" x 2" and fits 28"- 37" waist/hips.

Peru
These women are from Ayacucho, Peru, a region hit hard in the 1980's by the Shining Path terrorist group. After the group was suppressed by the government in the 1990's, various NGOs went to Ayacucho to help the women who had been raped and abused. Small artisan groups were formed to create products using ancestral embroidery techniques. Ayacucho is now a peaceful place with artisans enjoying steady employment. Jenny Krauss works directly with these artisans to import their products and support their community.
